Two Reviews of Angela Davis
Two Reviews of Angela Davisââ¬â¢ Women Race and Class (1983) By: Brittany Turnbull I. The Reviews a. Amy Winter [Women Race and Class] Off Our Backs, January-February Issue (2005) pp48-49 b. Ann Russo [Book Review]Women Studies International Forum, Volume 6, Number 2 (1983) pp249 II. Synopsis of Reviews a. Winter, Off Our Backs The analyst concentrated on the various pieces of history of the African American lady just as the historical backdrop of all ladies all in all. She separated the audit by talking about every section to match with Davisââ¬â¢ separate of her book and concentrated on the significant subtleties of every part that she discovered Davis had brought out. Winter doesnââ¬â¢t offer a lot of conclusion inside her audit since she basically adheres to the way that the book is expounded on persecution of African American ladies and African American individuals and she primarily portrays precisely what Davis composed. In any case, Winter offered some analysis when Davis had expounded on how ladies functioning in the plants and doing hard work was more intriguing than accomplishing house work. Winter found that there was no distinction in light of the fact that whichever way something should have been cleaned. One just received the rewards of a check while the other didn't. This was a decent and careful audit in light of the fact that in addition to the fact that it looked at the entire book it took a gander at every individual part and the primary concerns inside every section. b. Russo, Women Studies International Forum There is an alternate way to deal with this audit since it is essentially an examination of what Davisââ¬â¢ topic or by and large significance of the book was. Russo portrayed the book as in the book wasnââ¬â¢t about mistreatment of Black ladies or Black individuals. It was tied in with contrasting the Black ladies with White ladies the general misogynist abuse that the two of them needed to survive and still are surviving. Russo portrayed this book as a being a women's activist book about woman's rights all in all and the transformation everything being equal. There was no conversation about the historical backdrop of mistreatment that Black ladies needed to live with after some time or anything thusly. There was not notice of recorded figures too. This survey was acceptable as in it was an examination of the general thought of the book, anyway I feel that Russo was totally off-base in her investigation. She neglected to understand the specific battles and the specific contrasts among White and Black ladies. She likewise neglected to understand that the utilization of White ladies inside the content was to think about the amount increasingly troublesome Black ladies had it over White ladies as far as the sexual and racial segregation that Black ladies have needed to experience and endeavor to defeat from the beginning of time.

Allen, Ethan
Allen, Ethan Allen, Ethan, 1738â"89, hero of the American Revolution, leader of the Green Mountain Boys , and promoter of the independence and statehood of Vermont, b. Litchfield (?), Conn. He had some schooling and was proud of his deist opinions, which he later incorporated in Reason the Only Oracle of Man (1784). After fighting briefly in the French and Indian Wars , he interested himself in land speculation, and in 1770 he appeared as one of the proprietors in the New Hampshire Grants . He and his brothers, notably Ira Allen, became the leaders of the New England settlers and speculators in the disputed landsâ"inveterate enemies of the Yorkers (settlers under New York patents) and violent opponents of all attempts of New York to exert control in the area. He was active in forming the Green Mountain Boys and became their leader in defying the New York government and harrying the Yorkers. Gov. Tryon of New York put a price on the heads of Allen and two of his followers, but Ethan was no t captured. After the outbreak of the American Revolution, he made the Green Mountain Boys into an independent patriot organization. Joined by Benedict Arnold (with a commission from Massachusetts) and some Connecticut militia, Ethan Allen and his men captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British on May 10, 1775. Legend says that when the British officer asked him under what authority he acted, Ethan Allen roared, In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress! The story is, however, apocryphal. Allen then urged an expedition against Canada, and the Green Mountain Boys were attached to Gen. P. J. Schuyler's invasion force, but the men chose not Allen, but his cousin Seth Warner , as leader. Allen went on the expedition and, in a rash effort to capture Montreal before the main Continental army arrived, was captured (Sept., 1775) by the British. He told his own story of this in the popular Narrative of Colonel Ethan Allen's Captivity, which appeared in 1779, a year after he had been exchanged. He returned to Vermont, which had declared its independence but was unrecognized by the Continental Congress. Ethan and his brother Ira then devoted themselves to insuring the new political unit in one way or another. The region remained in danger of British attack, and the British late in 1779 opened negotiations with Ethan Allen in an attempt to attach Vermont to Canada. No conclusion was reached, and the victory at Yorktown ending the American Revolution also ended the talks. Ethan Allen withdrew from politics in 1784. When he died, Vermont was still independent and still dickering with Congress and dealing with internal struggles between the Allen party and their opponents. See biographies by C. A. Depression Period In The United States - Free Essay Example
This article describes the great depression period in the United States, its causes and effects. There are many viewpoints exists on the events of the great depression period and this article will discuss events through two main philosopher viewpoints one from Emily Durkheim and other from Karl Marx. Causes of the great depression in the USA: The great depression period in the late 1920s in the United States was the worst time defined in economic history. When the stock market crashed in 1929, it created a financial panic among the wall street investors and is considered as begun of the great depression period. However, on the surface, this event looks like a starting point, according to multiple social thinkers and philosphers of the nineteenth century this event was inevitable. Karl Marx ViewPoint: Karl Marx, German philosopher, and sociologist of the nineteenth century believed that events like dramatic stock market crash are inevitable in a capitalist society due to inequality of wealth and class conflict in society. Marx was one of the greatest critics of capitalism. According to Marx: Commodities are the economic cells of capitalism (Russell, p26). He found two types of economic value: use and exchange. Use value is the importance that any good has for a human being. And exchange value is the relative worth of the commodity in the market transaction. Pre-capitalized societies were focused on the use value what is good for the planet and an individual being. The products were dictated by human needs rather than the market conditions. However, The primary goal of capitalism is to produce commodities that have the most exchange value rather than to produce goods that are useful to society. In extreme cases, if the products are bringing profit at the cost of harming human life is also acceptable. Cigarettes are the best example of such a commodity, it is scientifically proven that it is harmful to a human being but still being produced as there is a market and has a profitable exchange value. Marx also saw humans labor as commodities. Commodity the unit of exchange include goods, money, and human labor.(Russell, p26). In capitalist society, the industries uses human labor for mass production. Workers are responsible for a part of the product and most of the time have no control or visibility on the distribution or market place. They get paid for their time and dont own anything. Since workers do not own the product, it is up to the owners to destribute surplus, the profit earned on the product. This was considered as one of the factors that lead to the great depression The rich was taking advantage of the working class by paying unfair wage and demending unfair hours and keeping the surplus, profit, to themselves, creating wealth inequality in the society. Also, people themselves are seen as commodities in the capitalist society. Marx called the market demand as an alien force. It has been artificially created by industries and he called this a False consciousness It is imposed by a powerful class or group that are not in the persons own best interest. Ideas such as the emphasis of competition over cooperation, or of hard work being its own reward, clearly benefit the owners of industry. Therefore, workers are less likely to question their place in society and assume individual responsibility for existing conditions. In Capitalism, the market conditions are the alien force that drives how people work and consume, dictate their lives. But it is human themselves that has cr eated this force and will destroy them. True consciousness, in Marxs way of inverting the Hegelian dialectic, would require breaking the bonds of alienated religious and market superstitious. (Russell, p 27) Marx saw the whole society as a static and rigid triangle divided into different classes based on wealth. On the base of the triangle, he saw working class as the foundation and on the very top, he saw the politician and rich industrialist. Marx described capitalist society as an alienated act What dictates consumption is not human need but also possession of money. Alienation as a whole means that an individual has no control over his life as an individual who is not an owner cannot relate to its work and due to competition feeling alienated with others. Marx realized that owning and finding a sense of self in what we do is important for an individual essense and capitalist is taking that away from an individual. Additionally, Marx saw the class conflict in society as the primary means of change. Economically, he saw conflict existing between the owners of the means of productionâ⬠the rich and the working class. So, according to Marx the crash of the stock market is the begining of the class conflict and it is inevitable. It was an indication that worker class rose from the bottom to fight the owners. Its the first sign of rebel first collapse of capitalism.
